In July 1996, driven by a demand from visitors to know more and to learn more, Tjapukai left Kuranda where it had operated its own theatre for the previous 9 years, and opened Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park.
Tjapukai is located at Caravonica, near Smithfield, 15 minutes north of Cairns along the Captain Cook Highway. It is both a magnificent attraction and a milestone accomplishment - a privately owned business with the majority shareholding forever in the hands of the tribal councils themselves.
The 25 acre park combines the latest in theatre and technology, interactive activities with Aboriginal people, and features authentic traditional culture and customs.
- The Tjapukai Camp Cultural Centre has interactive demonstrations of boomerangs, didgeridoos and bush foods.
- Holographic images and live actors combine in the Creation Theatre to tell the wondrous legends of the Storywaters.
- Dance and music comes alive in the Tjapukai Dance Theatre.
- The History Theatre provides an audiovisual presentation of recent and past Aboriginal history and culture.
- Between the theatres Tjapukai has created the Magic Space, a museum gallery of modern and ancient artworks.
Tjapukai's signature Boomerang Restaurant offers a sumptuous buffet lunch daily which includes a range of fish and meat dishes, healthy salads, homemade soups and breads accented with condiments, chutneys, dressings and salsas influenced by indigenous ingredients such as mountain pepper, lilli pilli, quandongs and other bush foods.
NIGHT FIRE BY TJAPUKAI
Nightfire is Tjapukai’s evening experience meeting the Bama, the Indigenous rainforest people, who paint your face to link you to their traditional land and take you on a mesmerising journey with the haunting sounds of the didgeridoo
Follow the Tjapukai warriors to a corroboree celebrating Aboriginal Dreamtime stories and join the Rainbow Serpent circle to learn traditional language songs before the ceremonial fire is lit with a spectacular fire ball shooting towards the stars.
Enjoy Australian meats, seafood and an array of salads and desserts featuring tantalising Indigenous flavours at the Flame Tree Bar & Grill. Relax around the fire with the Tjapukai warriors where there is time for an intimate chat, an end to a night of cultural entertainment
